Brown Bear

This picture was taken on a penninsula off Lynn Canal outside of Juneau by someone Mike works with.
I understand you don't want to mess with the Brown Bears. They are sure cute to look at, but they can be very hazardous to your health!!!

Just a matter of time...

Well, there was apparently a 'bear-attack' at the glacier today on the Trail of Time. I was at work and missed all the excitement, but for some...I bet it was a pretty interesting day.
I went by the glacier this evening with Rick & Linda and visited with a ranger that we are on a first-name-basis with (he hee hee - I know, we are frequent fliers there)
It seems that a cinnamon black-bear that the rangers have named 'Nicky' wandered onto the trail this afternoon around 2PM and encountered a large group of tourists. Unclear what happened next, but after she threatened them by popping her jaws at them they contacted a ranger for assistance. By the time the ranger arrived, she was pretty upset and did not respond to the horns they were blowing to encourage her & the cubs to move along. She lunged at a ranger and in defense, he sprayed her with pepper-spray. She and the cubs left the area and to give her a chance to have some time to chill - the forestry service shut the glacier down for the night tonight at 8pm. It will reopen tomorrow at 8am, but hopefully she will have a chance to catch her breath and get a 'do-over'
This is a photo (taken in July) of the bear and her cubs:This is a photo of the beautiful colors the devil's club is beginning to turn. There is a lot of yellow in the leaves that are changing, but I hope to get some very colorful photos this weekend if the weather permits. This very large immature bald eagle was soaring around steep creek and rested on this branch posing so Bertha, Linda & I could all take photos. I would love to see how their pictures turned out!!!
